The road
Paved all the way and mostly good. The Dushanbe–Chanak section is a toll road (included in our price). Tunnels are long and badly lit; we drive them only in daylight in winter. Heavy trucks on the climbs.
Worth stopping
- Varzob gorge just north of Dushanbe.
- Iskanderkul lake — 23 km off the highway, add about 2.5 hours (see the variant below).
- Istaravshan — old town, Mug Teppe hill and the Kok Gumbaz mosque, 70 km before Khujand.
Good to know
- The road is open all year. In winter and early spring avalanches can close the Anzob or Shahristan approaches for hours; we watch the reports and move your date for free if the road is closed.
- There are flights Dushanbe–Khujand too; the car is for people who want the mountains on the way.
- Going on to Tashkent? Khujand → Oybek border → Tashkent is a short day; see our border routes.
