Dushanbe to Khorog: shared jeep, flight or private 4x4
Khorog is about 610 km from Dushanbe by the southern road via Kulob and Kalaikhum: 12–15 hours in one go, or two days with a night in Kalaikhum. There are three ways to do it; here is how they compare in 2026.

Shared jeep
Shared Land Cruisers leave Dushanbe for Khorog when all seats are sold. Seats are cramped for a long day, luggage goes on the roof, and stops are the driver’s choice. It is the cheapest way, and it works if you are alone and not in a hurry.
Flight
A small-plane flight between Dushanbe and Khorog has been operated on and off for years. It needs clear weather on both ends of a mountain valley, so cancellations are common. Do not build a tight plan around it; if you try, keep a day of slack and a road option.
Private 4x4
Your own Land Cruiser or Pajero with a driver who knows the road: you leave when you want, stop for photos along the Panj and can split the trip with a night in Kalaikhum. The price is per car for up to 4 people; fuel and the driver’s return are included. A GBAO permit on your e-visa is needed in all three cases.
The road
- Dushanbe → Kulob → Kalaikhum: about 370 km, mostly paved.
- Kalaikhum → Khorog: about 240 km of broken asphalt and dirt along the Afghan border, repaved closer to Khorog.
- The northern road via Tavildara is shorter but unpaved and steep — summer only, on request.
- The first GBAO checkpoint is before Kalaikhum: carry copies of your passport, visa and permit.
