Day by day

  1. Day 1 Dushanbe → Kulob → Kalaikhum (~370 km). First views of Afghanistan across the Panj.
  2. Day 2 Kalaikhum → Rushan → Khorog (~240 km). The hardest road of the trip; evening in Khorog’s park and bazaar.
  3. Day 3 Khorog → Garmchashma → Ishkashim → Yamchun → Langar (~220 km) through the Wakhan.
  4. Day 4 Langar → Khargush pass → Bulunkul / Yashilkul (~125 km). Night at the coldest village in Tajikistan.
  5. Day 5 Bulunkul → Alichur → Murghab (~145 km). Market, yurts, the Pamiri plateau.
  6. Day 6 Murghab → Ak-Baital (4,655 m) → Karakul → Kyzyl-Art → Sary-Tash (~230 km).
  7. Day 7 Sary-Tash → Taldyk pass → Osh (~185 km). Drop-off at your hotel.

The road

Dushanbe → Kalaikhum is mostly paved (southern route via Kulob). Kalaikhum → Khorog is the notorious stretch: broken asphalt and dirt along the river, recently repaved closer to Khorog. The Wakhan is gravel and dirt to Langar and over the Khargush pass; from Alichur to Murghab and on to Karakul it is patchy asphalt at 3,500–4,600 m. Dirt around the Kyzyl-Art border, then good road from Sary-Tash to Osh.

Worth stopping

  • Yamchun fortress and the Bibi Fatima hot spring above the Wakhan.
  • Langar petroglyphs and the view of the Hindu Kush.
  • Bulunkul and Yashilkul lakes.
  • Ak-Baital pass, 4,655 m — the highest point of the road.
  • Karakul — the high lake under the Kyrgyz border.

Good to know

  • You need a Tajik e-visa with the GBAO permit option ticked. Carry about 10 photocopies of passport, visa and permit — checkpoints keep them.
  • Season: May to October; June to September is the safest. Spring mud and landslides can close Kalaikhum–Khorog for a day or two — your trip has slack built in.
  • Homestays and guesthouses cost about $20–35 per person with dinner and breakfast — not in our price, the driver books them with you.
  • The Kyrgyz checkpoint at Bor-Dobo is about 30 km after Kyzyl-Art. Kyzyl-Art has reopened for foreigners; we re-check its status before you leave.
  • Arriving in Osh? Our sister service RideKG does Osh airport, Lenin Peak and Bishkek.

Included

  • Private car and driver, fuel, road fees and parking
  • Meet & greet with a name sign at the airport, 60 min free waiting after landing
  • Stops on the way where you ask (up to 1 h in total on transfers)
  • Multi-day trips: the driver’s lodging, meals and return drive
  • Free cancellation up to 24 h before pickup
  • Transfers: pay the driver in cash (USD or somoni) — no prepayment
