The road
Paved to Kalaikhum (about 370 km, with a short dirt section in the gorge). Kalaikhum → Khorog (about 240 km) is broken asphalt and dirt for the first 90–100 km, patched after Rushan and newly paved near Khorog. The northern route via Tavildara is shorter but steeper and unpaved — summer only, on request.
Worth stopping
- Kulob and the Panj river view.
- Kalaikhum — the gateway to the Pamir.
- Afghan villages on the opposite bank all day.
Good to know
- GBAO permit required; the first checkpoint is before Kalaikhum.
- Shared Land Cruisers also run this road (seat prices around 300 somoni in 2026, unverified) — slower, crowded, and they leave when full.
- Flights Dushanbe–Khorog exist but are weather-dependent and often cancelled; the road is the reliable option.
