The Wakhan is the most beautiful part of the Pamir: a green strip of villages, Silk Road forts and hot springs along the Panj, with the Hindu Kush across the river in Afghanistan. Our 3-day 4x4 trip runs from Khorog via Ishkashim, Yamchun and Langar, over the Khargush pass and out to the Pamir Highway at Alichur and Murghab — about 475 km.

Day by day
- Day 1 Khorog → Garmchashma → Ishkashim → Yamchun (~150 km).
- Day 2 Yamchun → Vrang → Langar (~70 km), petroglyph walk.
- Day 3 Langar → Khargush pass → Bulunkul → Alichur → Murghab (~255 km).
The road
Khorog → Ishkashim (about 105 km) is partly dirt, then paved. Ishkashim → Langar (about 115 km) is gravel and crumbling asphalt. Langar → Khargush pass (4,344 m) is a rough dirt track; from the junction it is mostly paved to Murghab.

- GBAO permit required (tick it on the e-visa). Checkpoints in the Wakhan check it carefully.
- Season: May to October.

Yes — add Dushanbe → Khorog ($530 in one long day, $690 in two) or take the 7-day Pamir Highway, which already includes the Wakhan.
Is it safe near the Afghan border?
The Tajik side of the Wakhan is calm and visited by thousands of travellers every summer. We follow the advice of local drivers and border posts and change the route if needed.
